Argentina is bursting with cultural charm and natural wonders. It is a country of vast beauty including the tropical north, the Andes and deserts of Patagonia in the south. Though a middle-income country, Argentina has experienced economic turmoil over the last few years. Students are keen to learn English and Lattitude Volunteers assist in this role, while others work in more developed schools in the capital or in community centres.
Is it for me?
Volunteering in Argentina offers the opportunity to experience the Latin way of life, working with passionate and enthusiastic Argentinians across some very different placements. If you are looking for a new cultural experience and can adapt to the Argentinian pace of life, then a rewarding time awaits. You will need to show flexibility and initiative and in turn, you will have the chance to develop your Spanish and build strong ties with your host family.
English Teaching placements may be in fee-paying schools for both primary and secondary levels, or at private language institutes for children aged from ten through to adults. English is considered to be a very valuable language to learn and volunteers use their conversational English skills to assist and support both teachers and students in the classroom. Classes at the institutes are run during the day and evening, and often volunteers assist with some evening classes.
In Latin America, many parents send their children to bilingual schools in order to give them a full exposure to a foreign language from a young age, and so as native English speakers you will be highly valued within the school. Typically, volunteers work from 8am-4.15pm and duties can include assisting teachers in class with written and oral activities, helping to prepare educational materials, replacing the teacher in the event of absence, helping in the organisation of extracurricular activities such as concerts, supervising lunch and break-times and accompanying children on school trips.

Accommodation & Food
Volunteers are usually accommodated with a host family. Hosts are always generous but will expect the volunteer to contribute to family life. Despite the fact that Argentina is a big meat eating country, vegetarian volunteers have always managed without any problems.
While the cost of the experience includes food and accommodation, this placement offers an additional living allowance to volunteers in the form of pocket money to cover your day to day expenses.
Before you go:
We find out more about each volunteer through an interview which helps us select the right people and after a second interview, we match them to a placement that’s right for them.
Once selected, each volunteer is allocated a Coordinator in the Melbourne office who assists them with all preparations. They provide briefing materials, support with logistics such as flights and visas and are there to answer any questions.
Volunteer are briefed in person or in an online session to prepare them for their placement ahead.
Volunteers complete their own Learning and Development Plan which helps to identify goals and personal skills they would like to develop, and these areas of development are followed up throughout their time away.
All volunteers sign our Code of Conduct to ensure that our expectations of each volunteer are agreed and clear from the outset.
When you're overseas:
We have paid staff based in each country. Our Country Managers oversee the program and work with a team of Local Representatives who provide support in the local areas and develop close relationships with placement hosts.
Volunteers attend a group orientation on arrival in Argentina and, if needed for their placement, undertake a short teaching skills course.
Each volunteer is visited at their placement soon after arrival by an in-country staff member to check how things are and provide additional support if needed.
We work with Embassies and High Commissions to ensure we can respond to any situation and provide 24/7 emergency support from Melbourne.
When you're back:
We recognise that coming home can be difficult and provide one-to-one support, with onward referrals for further professional support if needed. Volunteers are invited to debriefing events and become part of our network of alumni.
We undertake reviews against the learning needs identified before going overseas which may form part of a reference provided at the end. A letter can also be provided to use towards an application for Youth Allowance.
Placement Locations: Cordoba & Neuquén
Weekends are usually free. In your free time and after your placement, explore Argentina’s rich cultural diversity. Part Latin American, part European, discover the country’s melting pot of cultural roots not only in cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, but also in other fascinating cities such as Córdoba, Mendoza and Bariloche.
Must-see Argentinian natural wonders include the unforgettable Iguazú falls, Patagonia’s Perito Moreno Glacier and awe-inspiring Andean peaks near Mendoza and San Juan that rise 6000m above sea level. Argentina’s cultural diversity is matched by the feast of geographical variety it offers curious travellers: rich wetlands, glacial lakes and mountains, forests, salt flats and deserts. Many volunteers also make the most of their free time to brush up their language skills by taking Spanish lessons. Given that Argentineans are famously fanatic about soccer, soaking up the atmosphere at matches can be a very memorable experience.
